Tasaru, Kenya

A portrait of a true warrior.

This Maasai woman is one of the members of a womens group in Kenya, who are trying to establish alternative rite of passage for Maasai girls instead of female circumcision – or actually female genital cutting. I reported so many nasty cases, where girls as young as 7 were cutted with dirty blades, sometimes a piece of glass, then stiched together somehow and some time later basicly got raped by their husbands – aged 30-40, even more. The girls quite often suffer for serious pain every time they even take one step, and you can guess who does all the hard work in the house.

  3. Hi,
I am writing to express my urgent need of advise and help on how to rescue my 17 year old sister who has just been forced into marriage to a 40 year old man with two wives in the Narok area in Kenya, Africa. She was born on the 25th Septemper 1991. This is a hot spot for forced and arranged marriages, polygamy, and female circumcision. She and my other sisters were victims of female genital mutilation, which was performed secretly without my knowledge, as was this arranged marriage.
I beg for anything to save this one life. I am ready for anything to bring her into safety.
My name is Musa Paul Ole Seno, and I reside at 1 Forest St, South Burlington, Vermont 05403. I can be reached by phone at #802.380.3071

Thank you for your immediate help to save my sister.

    Sincerely,

    • Dear Musa,
thank you for your heart-braking message. It brought tears to my eyes, since I have met these kind of girls myself.

Try to get in contact with some NGOs which work in this field, especially on your local branch of UNIFEM and UNDP, United Nations organizations. They have a program against the female genital mutilation and forced marriages on this area in Kenya. I wish all the best and courage to you and your sisters.

If any reader knows more and can help, please do.

      Maiku
