Vientiane, Laos

Vientiane, “City of sandalwood”, is a charming small city with a mix of cultures: from ancient Buddhist kingdoms to more modern French Indochina. In March 2003, I had many lazy late-morning breakfasts with a bowl of cafe au lait and a baguette. My feet were bare on the silky smooth teak floors, and the fan floung-floung-flounged in the ceiling making the light white curtains flutter. I surely felt like being in some 1940s movies.

One day I managed to get up from my half-comatose and go to Pha That Luang, the great stupa and the national symbol of Laos. Many times build, many times destroyed.
